Drive down West Main Street on a Saturday morning this fall and you will pass four storefronts that did not exist a year ago: a coffee shop still finishing its space, a plant shop born in a garage, a resale store stocked from abandoned storage units and, two blocks away, a gymnastics academy with a newly certified climbing wall. These businesses serve different customers and needs.
Four New Stops, Four Different Reasons to Go Downtown
Nova Vita Coffee opened this spring at 109 W. Main St., next to Eloise Trading Co., after months of renovations. Founders Hanna Boyer, Cori Bray and DJ Lipscomb created a craft coffee bar with a fully gluten-free bakery menu. An August roundup in The Pilot still described the shop as being in a soft opening, and its plans for live music and game nights could turn a coffee run into a reason to linger.
Seedy's Plants also gained a permanent address this year, moving from a garage operation to a brick-and-mortar location on the edge of downtown. In addition to retail sales and plant sourcing, it offers landscape design and installation.
Home Again Thrift opened on U.S. 1 with a model unlike other local secondhand shops. Instead of relying on donations, owner Alex Rodriguez buys abandoned storage units and resells their contents, creating inventory that changes constantly.
At Sandhills Gymnastics Academy on Ampersand Drive, a climbing wall left mostly unused since the pandemic reopened this year after upgrades. It now offers instructor-led sessions, holds Moore County's first USA Climbing certification for a wall of its kind and serves climbers from age 4 through adulthood.
A coffee shop, plant store, resale shop and climbing wall do not compete for the same dollar or hour. Together, they distinguish a downtown that is filling in from one that is merely getting crowded.
Not Just Downtown
Main Street is not the only part of Aberdeen changing shape this year. Out along the corridor, Walmart finished an 18-week remodel of its Aberdeen store, part of a wave of updates the company rolled out at 37 locations across the state.
